The Most Reasonable Arguments For Abortion

Even as pro life and pro choice abortion advocates continue to rail against one another, many of the most reasonable arguments for abortion get ignored by both sides. Often, the discussion descends into something that more closely resembles a religious war than any serious debate about legal policy and justice. Here is a look at some of the many pro abortion facts that often receive only minimal attention from the media and others.

When it comes to abortion pro life advocates often ignore one simple fact, women were aborting pregnancies long before it was legal to do so. By most estimates, tens of thousands of women were dying each year due to unsafe abortions performed in inferior medical environments by incompetent providers. Pro life abortion critics may claim to treasure life, but their disregard for the health and lives of these women is something that should not be overlooked.

Abortion pro choice advocates often cite rape and incest as legitimate reasons for a woman to abort a pregnancy, but let themselves be silenced by religious opponents who try to turn the conversation toward issues of morality. The fact is that there is nothing moral about forcing a woman who has been raped and impregnated to carry that embryo to term. In, fact it is one of the most immoral things that society could do.

Pro choice advocates need only point to religion’s own standards when arguing this aspect of the issue. There is ample evidence of these religions’ own inconsistencies in this area. For example, the sanctity of life that these people claim to honor has exceptions where issues of justice are concerned. That is why so many pro life advocates also support the pro death legal framework that enables the state to kill criminals.

By ignoring pro abortion arguments in the case of rape and incest, these opponents argue against justice for the female victims of these crimes. To force any woman to endure a pregnancy brought about by rape is to force her to recall the rape each and every day of her pregnant life. It is difficult to see how any person of moral or religious character could in any way consider that position to be a just one.

One of the best arguments for abortion or choice flows from the gender makeup of the political world. Despite major strides in equality, there is no arguing with the fact that women remain dramatically underrepresented in every area of government charged with making policy. Men have a disproportionate say in all matters of law, but that lack of proportion is especially egregious in this matter.

Like it or not, pregnancy impacts women far more than it affects men. Men who believe that they have a right to tell any woman what to do with her body are little different than those men of generations past who believed they had a right to own other human beings. Women are not property. Nor are they children who need the guidance and direction of males.

Religion is also one of the more common arguments used to counter pro choice advocates. Many fundamentalists consistently argue on the basis of their beliefs. The problem with that is that there are many aspects of religion that society chooses to keep out of the public square, and this issue should be included. For centuries, there has been a tradition of keeping religion and politics at arm’s length from one another.

In addition, there is the matter of poverty. Often, women are forced into poverty by legal policies that require them to have many children. By some estimates, nearly a third of all women are living in abject poverty. Most of these impoverished women have been forced to bear as many as four, five, or even six children each.

Had these women retained their reproductive rights, their circumstances could have been far different. Worse, a large percentage of the women in the world can be raped by their husbands or other men without the rapists facing any legal consequences whatsoever. The denial of these women’s reproductive rights only adds further insult to that injury by consigning them to a permanent state of poverty.

There are many reasons for abortion to remain legal, and they should all be considered mainstream arguments by rational people everywhere. They involve issues of morality and justice, and deserve to be heard in the public square whenever the discussion turns to this topic. For both men and women who respect women’s rights, these arguments for abortion rights should be raised in any debate with opponents.

The Many Cons Of Abortion

Despite the many cons of abortion, terminating a pregnancy is legal in many countries. Some areas have adopted stricter parental notification and parental consent laws, but no one has successfully turned out legislation banning pregnancy termination. Even though the procedure is legal, many people believe that terminating a pregnancy is a serious human rights violation and that the procedure should be banned in most, if not all, cases.

One of the main reasons against abortion given by pro-life advocates is that life begins at conception. Abortions most often occur within the first eight weeks of a pregnancy. During that time, a baby develops a heartbeat and elementary brain activity. The RU-486 pill actually starves a fetus of vital nutrients, causing it to die and be expelled from the womb. Surgical abortions terminate the fetus before scraping the uterine lining.

Many people are against abortion because of their religious values. People who practice both Judaism and Christianity often cite the Sixth Commandment from the book of Exodus, which states that “Thou shalt not kill”. In the Islamic faith, the Koran specifically states, “Do no kill or take a human life which God has declared to be sacred”. People who practice these religions, particularly if they believe that their scriptures are to be interpreted literally, often oppose the procedure.

Some want to stop abortion because they believe that it violates the Hippocratic oath. One section of the oath, which is sworn to by doctors when they are authorized to practice medicine, states that “I will not give a woman a pessary to cause an abortion”. In the modern version of the oath, doctors swear that “above all, I must not play God”.

Crucial against abortion facts include the fact that the fetus may feel pain. Dr. J. S. Kanwaljeet, a professor at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, stated in the New York Times magazine that a fetus beyond 20 weeks of gestation is capable of feeling pain. This disturbing assertion dissuades many people from approving of the procedure, particularly in the later parts of a pregnancy.

Certain evidence suggests that women and men both endure psychological damage associated with pregnancy termination. Women who undergo the procedure are 154 percent more likely to commit suicide according the Southern Medical Journal. Also, the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology has reported that nearly half of all men feel regret and sadness after a pregnancy is terminated and that a quarter of all men experience a significant depression.

Many bioethicists argue that terminating pregnancy allows for discrimination. Fetuses with certain genetic abnormalities like Down’s Syndrome or cystic fibrosis may be terminated simply because of their genetic abnormality. When many people with abnormalities are able to lead rewarding lives in modern society, this discrimination becomes a major reason that makes people feel that abortion is wrong.

Major anti abortion facts include the proven health consequences for the mother. The International Journal of Epidemiology found that 15 percent of first-term miscarriages were attributable to previous abortions. Also, the Breast Cancer Prevention Institute has recognized a correlation between abortion and increased risk of breast cancer.

One of the major arguments against abortion is that abortion doctors are entrepreneurs. Overall, the pro-choice industry makes about $830 million each year, and abortions may range in cost from about $350 to $1,000. Many people who declare themselves to be anti abortion believe that doctors and organizations such as Planned Parenthood care more about making money than they do about legitimate health care.

Pregnancy termination means that fewer children have the chance to be adopted. While over 2 million people in the United States want to adopt babies, only about 134,000 U. S. Babies are available. Many people on the pro-life side of the abortion debate argue that mothers should carry their children to term and then give them up for adoption so that they can live with loving families and fulfill their potential.

Many people are disturbed by the profound cons of abortion. The many fetuses who have been terminated over the years could have grown into valuable contributors to society. Someone with the capability to cure cancer or to become the next president or prime minister may have died under a doctor’s knife. In the end, the thought of what society has lost because of pregnancy termination may be the most disturbing thought of all.

There is no shortage of opinions on abortion and there will always be debates on abortion and abortion arguments. Throughout abortion history, people have talked about abortion rights, abortion issues and have added many valid points to the abortion debate. Here are some of those key points of the abortion debate.

Abortion Pros and Cons:

Abortion Cons – here are some of the arguments against abortion.

- If life begins at conception, then abortion can be vied as murder, therefore abortions go against the common idea of sanctity of human life.

- Adoption is an alternative that accomplishes the exact same result and there is an abundance of families looking to adopt.

- Abortions can list in medical problems later in life.

- Abortions can cause stress and psychological pain.

Abortions Pros – here are some of the arguments for abortion.

- If the abortion takes place within the first semester, the fetus cannon be considered a separate entity because at this point it is incapable of existing without the mother.

- Adoption is NOT an alternative to abortion because it is the woman’s choice to choose and each choice has a different psychological effect on the mother.

- It is part of a woman’s civil rights to have control over her body.

- Teenagers who become pregnant have grim futures for both her and her child.

- It can be argued that although there is life in an egg, it is not yet a person and therefore abortion should not be viewed as murder.

Well, the abortion definition according to Dictionary.com is the “deliberate termination of human pregnancy or any of various surgical methods for terminating a pregnancy, especially during the first six months.” It goes on to say “the removal of an embryo or fetus from the uterus in order to end a pregnancy.” But this definition doesn’t help anybody so read on..

Here are some facts about abortion:

There are two kinds of abortions in the USA that are legal. The first kind of abortion is an in-clinic and the second kind of abortion is through the taking of an abortion pill. Abortions in the USA are quite common. Almost one third of all women before the age of 45 have an abortion. There are approximately 42 million abortions that take place worldwide every year. This is equal to 115,000 abortions every single day. 83% of these abortions occur in underdeveloped countries, and only the remaining 17% happen in developed countries. In the United States there are approximately 1.37 million abortions every year which comes out to 3,700 abortions every day. However, this statistic was taken in 1996 and therefore may be outdated.

Abortion facts and abortion statistics

- About 88% of abortions are done within the first trimester.

- About 59% happen within the first 8 weeks

- 19% happen in weeks nine and ten.

- 10% in weeks 11 and 12.

- 1% of total abortions happen only due to serious health reasons.

- 66% of all abortions are done by women who have never been married

- 49% of the abortions resulted from pregnancies due to condoms breaking or being used incorrectly.

- About half of the women going to get their first abortions didn’t use any kind of contraception.

Read Abortion Surveillance at CDC.gov for more information.

If those facts on abortion didn’t help, here is more information on abortion.

Here are some facts on who is having abortions:

60% of women who have abortions are white women, however black women are 3 times as likely to have an abortion and Hispanic women are twice as likely.

28.7% of women who obtain abortions have a family income of less than 15k.

19% of the women who obtain abortions have a family with income from 15k to 30k.

1% of all women have abortions due to unfortunate circumstances. 6% of abortions are obtained due to a potential health risk for either the mother or the child.

For the longest time people believed that abortion caused psychological problems but it turns out that abortion does NOT cause psychological distress. There is no such thing as “post-abortion syndrome”. It seems that post abortion syndrome was made up for political reasons. The research that proved that there is no such thing as post abortion syndrome was done by U.S. researchers at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD.

A lot of places on the net have information an abortion. If you are simply interested in abortion and would like to learn about the history of abortion then check out an article on about.com.

Some things to keep in mind:

There are a lot of things to consider when researching the abortion topic. But research on your own can only get you so far. If this research is ment for a serious decision, it is important to consult an expert or your doctor. Please do not base any serious decision on these facts alone. If however, you are simply interested in these facts and would like to know more about this debate and the points that each individual side makes, feel free to continue reading. Check out the pros and cons pages for details on each side of the abortion argument. There are always more points being made and there will always be new improvements in technology that will either bring up more points or make the previous ones invalid. It is, therefore important to keep up to do date on the abortion topic.
